Argentina vs Mexico

Football and in Day 12 of the World Cup, Greece, Nigeria, France and South Africa were all eliminated in group stage action.

This morning, Argentina secured maximum points after beating Greece 2-0.

And in the other Group B match, South Korea and Nigeria played to a 2-2 draw.

That allowed the Koreans to advance into the round of 16 with 4 points, as Greece finished with 3 and the Super Eagles return home with only 1 point.

With the draw, South Korea march on to face Group A winners, Uruguay.

Last night, the South Americans beat Mexico 1-0 to finish on 7 points.

And despite the loss, the Mexicans were 2nd on 4 points and will next face Diego Maradona's team.

As for France, they lost 2-1 to South Africa and finished at the bottom of the table with only 1 point and 1 goal scored in 3 matches.

But South Africa who were level with Mexico on points, fail to advance due to an inferior goal-difference.

Local fans can however take heart that Bafana Bafana ended their campaign on a winning note.

And after 4 games without a win, Geylang United beat Sengkang Punggol FC 2-0 at the Hougang Stadium last night.

The win puts the Eagles in 4th place and 9 points off the lead.

And speaking of the league leaders, Etoile FC look poised to lose several players in the S-league's current transfer window.

Khaled Kharroubi and Leeroy Anton have both left the French setup while captain Mathias Verschave and 2 others are also reportedly unsettled and on the verge of leaving.

But despite earlier reports, head coach Patrick Valle will remain till the end of the season.

Etoile FC with a 2-point lead over 2nd placed Tampines Rovers, are looking to be the 1st foreign club ever to lift the S-league trophy.

Germany vs England Match Analysis :

The spectre of penalties will loom large over the England players, having suffered semi-final defeats on spot-kicks to a German team at both the 1990 World Cup and Euro 96, not to mention England's unenviable position of having the worst record on penalties in world football. But if England are to continue a run of form which sees them unbeaten against Germany in three meetings on foreign soil then the focus must be on winning the match, and not any shootout.

The history between the two nations is well documented, with England's one and only World Cup win coming against West Germany at Wembley in 1966. The Germans had the Indian sign over England for 34 years, including a showdown at the 1970 World Cup, a draw at the 1982 World Cup and those infamous shootouts, before England finally gained a competitive victory over Germany at Euro 2000.

The days of Germany ruling the roost over England now seem to be a thing of the past, with England winning 5-1 in Munich in a World Cup qualifier in 2001 and coming away victorious from Berlin in an international friendly in November 2008. Germany have also had their share of success in that time, though, so there is every reason to suggest this game will be a tight affair.

England are at full strength going into the game, with all 23 squad members taking part in training. With Ledley King back from a groin injury and Jamie Carragher available again following suspension, Fabio Capello has options at the back. England kept a clean sheet in picking up their first, crucial win over Slovenia on Wednesday and put in a much-improved overall performance, so it seems unlikely there will be any changes to the starting-line-up, with Matthew Upson keeping his place alongside John Terry.

The pressure will be on Wayne Rooney to finally get on the scoresheet after a disappointing campaign and, while there were positives against Slovenia, England's top players must improve to oust Joachim Low's side.

While England may put out an unchanged side, Germany have decisions to make. One is made for them as Miroslav Klose comes back from a one-match ban while Cacau, who started in his place against Ghana, will miss the match with a stomach strain.

More concerning is the fitness of Bastian Schweinsteiger, the lynchpin who, alongside Sami Khedira, has held the midfield together for Mesut Ozil to provide the attacking impetus. But Schweinsteiger has a thigh muscle injury and, with the England game coming just four days after the last group game, he may not have sufficient time to recover. If Low is forced to deploy Toni Kroos in his place, it could be pivotal, but Schweinsteiger took place in full training on Saturday.

Germany also have issues at left back. Bayern Munich's Holger Badstuber played there in the first two games but came in for much criticism. Jerome Boateng was then brought in to start against Ghana but he was replaced in the 73rd minute by Marcell Jansen and also faces a race against time to prove his fitness. Low will probably not decide who plays there until Sunday.

Germany player to watch: Miroslav Klose. Second only to Gerd Muller in Germany's all-time scoring chart, Klose went into the finals with questions to answer after a dismal season with Bayern Munich. A goal in the first game against Australia relieved some of the pressure but he was then controversially sent off against Serbia. England have yet to face a quality forward yet in the finals, with Robert Green's gaffe against USA the only goal conceded, and despite Klose's troubles, he is a tournament performer and his display could be the difference.

England player to watch: Jermain Defoe. With only one goal against a major nation, and that being in an international friendly against Netherlands, questions remain over Defoe's pedigree on the biggest of stages. Goals against Andorra, Kahzakstan and Trinidad & Tobago and all well and good, but Germany will not allow the same time and space. His match-winning performance against Slovenia provided a timely boost, and his ability to shake off the shackles of the German back line may shape England's hopes.

Who predicts or expects a win for England? England played their best game in the WC against Slovenia but were nervous as the game progressed without adding to the 1-0 lead.

One thing for sure (and I mentioned it on Twitter, other sites and blogs): Capello does not yield easily and Terry ended up having to issue an apology while Joe Cole played as a sub in last 18 minutes.

I was not impressed by Joe Cole to be honest and I think the options are just limited but let's see what Capello and the players can do against the Germans.

It could go to over-time. I feel England will make the QFs but now we're sure Germany will be opponents and I am not as confident.

The Germans have a Lahm, Ozil, Schweinsteiger, Podolski and Klose will return. None world beaters and England can counter with Gerrard, Barry, Rooney and Lampard and Ashley Cole. The main issue is Rooney is visibly frustrated and might lose it if he does not score soon. There's also concern about his injury so he needs to b 100%.

I am going 2-1 Germany win after extra-time.

Oh. England. If only beer could help them beat Germany. One thinks that beer probably wasn’t the catalyst in beating Slovenia (who, after contriving to beat themselves against USA the game before, needed little excuse to implode), and if England play like they did against Slovenia they’re unlikely to go past the second round.

That’s not to say that they didn’t play well – they did, but while that level would have sufficed for the group stages, it’s a different ball game where knockout games against big teams are concerned.

There’s a good reason why the likes of Germany, Italy and Brazil boss international football – their teams have it in their DNA to give 100% on the pitch, every single time they step on it. They tend to raise their game for a big stage, and while we’ve seen Germany be bossed on the pitch in finals in the last decade, we’ve also seen them perform consistently well in international tournaments at a higher level than England have aspired to, even under Capello in the qualifying stages.

Forget the England-German rivalry (seriously, ignore Low, forget the England-Germany rivalry), there will hardly be any time for that to register, even though the tabs will do their best to dredge it up again. England need this to be a strong, imposing performance devoid of defensive mistakes. Germany, on the other hand, could easily sit back and wait for England to slip up, or push forward and force errors. Having seen recent England-Germany friendlies, I’m sure it will be the latter, and that will make for a cracking, old-fashioned slugfest.

If England are going to have any hope of this they have to get out of their funk and realise that they are at a World Cup. The lackadaisical nature of their play suggests they think they are still playing in Germany four years ago. As Franz Beckenbauer said “stupidly, the English have slipped up and finished second in their group”. Unlike Italy and France, England advanced from their made to win group. Their best players thus far have been Steven Gerrard and John Terry, and that’s about it.

This should even play out like Germany four years ago, with England finally coming alive with the meeting of some decent opposition, this time the Mannschaft replacing Portugal. If an improved side don’t turn up, I expect Germany to make sure this goes nowhere near penalties. Germany have so far proved admirable, progressive and excellent, and their defeat was simply unlucky. Their defence is forward thinking as well which is possibly their undoing.

They have a nice mix of international experience and youthful quality, and their trump card Mesut Oezil. I heard he was supposed to be good, but seeing him is different. He has been one of the best players at this tournament, with a smart brain, great ability, he ripped Australia to shreds and as seen against Ghana, capable of the beautiful.

England of course, have the Rooney factor. He so far has resembled a man who has no idea how to play football, much has been made of his relationship with Capello and all the other “strains” on the English team, that they only suffer from unlike anybody else. But Rooney is the key to English victory, he is all blood and guts and if he gets going, his genius may well shine.

If England go on to knock out Germany, I expect them to perform at a high level for any remaining games they have. It’s too hard to call, Germany will beat England depending on their attitude, an on form and determined Rooney can break any defence however, but Germany have Ozil, who could be as good as Zidane though a bit different, and of course both teams have more than just supporting players.

As we haven’t seen any change in England (beating Slovenia is nothing to get carried away over) I’ll have to go for Germany. Either way, it will be an interesting match.

Just kick the ball upfield and run then, right?

As it happened, the Dutch let in the only three goals they conceded all campaign against Iceland and FYR Macedonia, while hitting three of their 17 efforts to secure slender but controlled 1-0 victories in Glasgow and Oslo.
